I am the owner of Total Fitness and Massage. I started the business when I was 19, and we have grown from myself providing Remedial Massage treatments in a small massage room in my home, and running old school aerobics classes (eg. taking classes Ed’s Mum attended, while Ed went to crèche), to our base at Technopark and Dominic College.

We are now a successful multifaceted business, who provide Remedial Massage Treatments, Dry Needling, Rehabilitation, Bootcamps and Personal Training Sessions. I work in every part of the business from the office, to my 2 passions – training clients to get fit and healthy, and helping them to recover and repair with Remedial Massage Therapy. I started running bootcamp sessions back in 2008 (nearly 10 years ago).

My special areas of interest in Remedial Massage are Shoulders and Legs (Frozen Shoulder, Hamstring Strains, Calves Strains and Shin Splints). I myself have had these issues in the past and have successfully overcome them. The other area I specialise in is rehabilitation and postural correction exercises. With my experience being a Personal Trainer for over 15 years and Remedial Massage Therapist 14 years, I am lucky to be able to combine my knowledge to give a little something extra to my clients!

I am the loving partner to Emma, and dad to 2 gorgeous kids, Jade 4 and a half and Brooke 1 and a half. These three are my world. Oh and can’t forget Jess our Staffy. I am a Libran and I get my energy (my drive) from seeing people achieve their goals. The more people I see the more energy I have. You guys are the reason I get out of bed, work massive days and then do it all again. I need about 10mins of my own time a day. Not much I know. Poor Emma!! I am very competitive and driven person, and wont walk away from a challenge. I have even been able to transform Emma from being the most uncompetitive person I know, into someone that will now compete when challenged. Emma didn’t even want to win when playing board games (weird I know). I trained as a sprinter in my teenage years for northern suburbs athletics club. I have always had a love of being outdoors and being as active as possible. As most of you know I am not a person that can sit still. Back in 2004 I had a major motorbike accident and fractured my left Femur. I was lucky enough to recover fairly well post-accident, with only a leg length issue.

My favourite hobby has got to be Racing Cars or Motorbikes. I like cars from the 70’s (280zx and Celica) that are challenging to drive quickly. I love the feeling of adrenaline, when racing. The faster it is the more fun it is. I also enjoy working on my own fitness goals including Running (normally with my mate Richard) and playing Hockey for 4th Grade OHA. Over the 8 years I have played hockey we have won 2 premierships. I just need to find more time for hobbies – kids seem to absorb my weekends nowadays! Emma and I have worked our butts off during 2017. It has been a big challenge to create the 12 sessions a week bootcamp you see today. We have got an awesome team that are driven and dedicated to our members. Bring on 2018 for another awesome year.

…physio and just sport in general.

It fills me with great pride and happiness when one of the people that i am training smashes their goals and feels better for it.

I am a big pusher of happy gains. I believe that if you enjoy training and training makes you happy , you will see quicker and better results. I like training people how they want to be trained, this ensures that you get the results that you are after and your motivation stays high.

One of my favourite things is a clean kitchen before bed, sad I know! I eat LCHF or keto 95% of the time, nobody is perfect and this works for me. I have been a massage therapist for almost 9 years and a remedial massage therapist for 7 years. A couple years ago I added dry needling to my skill set – and love it! I am one of those ‘Bendy’ people so I am a big fan of yoga as a form of strengthening my body. I have shoulders that partially dislocate every time my arms are raised above my head. This has been a part of my life since was a little girl. We first discovered it while I was a gymnast. I used to ‘pop’ them in and out for fun L Something I would not recommend!!!

My fitness Journey

Well I have always been a pretty active person growing up. I didn’t like to sit still very much! As a young adult I started training for distance running until I had some severe hip pain that stopped me running. It took 6 months but we discovered I have mid hip dysplasia. I ended up having multiple hip surgeries to remove torn cartilage and ligaments. I was advised that if I wanted my hips to last until I was old enough to have hip replacements I should keep my weight in the low 50’s!!

After having time off with rehab for my hip and having suffered severe PND with our first born Jadie, I put on a significant amount of weight. My heaviest was 95kgs and I’m only 162cm tall. As part of my recovery from the PND I needed to lose weight to be able to recognise myself again, but I was unable to train because of the severe hip pain. My team of medical professionals and I decided that I needed to have some medical intervention to help me lose weight quickly. So after much consideration and with the support of my amazing partner Mark I had a lap band fitted in 2014. Since then I have lost almost 39kgs to be sitting comfortably at 56kgs. I lost roughly 25 kgs in the first year, then had my second bubba Brooke in 2016. In late 2016 I discovered LCHF and eating that way along with finally being able to begin my fitness training I lost the rest of the weight. I haven’t had anything in my lap band restricting me since I was pregnant with Brooke. So I am proud to say I am one of the success stories as far as lap banding goes! I’d say I used it as an expensive tool to help give me consequences and teach me about portion control. Using it this way with the support of Mark I was able to achieve my goals! So if you have just met me and think I seem like a super fit Mumma I am J But I haven’t always been this way. I understand chronic pain, obesity and have great empathy for where you are, so feel free to ask me anything, I am an open book about what I have been through.

I have recently moved more into the admin and management side of our business, after being a Remedial Massage Therapist with the company for 8 years. I am still learning but loving having more involvement in the business. You will see me around the massage clinic and I love coming to bootcamp and joining in 3-4 times per week. My specialty is yelling encouragement and motivating or pushing you to your limits by training alongside you at bootcamp J It has been a lovely change to get to come to more bootcamps over the last couple of months than ever before and getting to know you all. My Passion: Helping people – it’s simple really. I love to support, encourage, inspire and feed my family and friends and I am lucky enough to have a great big Total Fitness and Massage family!

I first got in to the massage industry to treat athletes, little did I know sports massage was just the tip of the iceberg for remedial massage. After completing my remedial training I had what I could only describe as hunger for more knowledge. In the 12 months after after finishing my diploma I’ve immediately started attending workshops, they were rock tape, treating athletes – ran by a massage therapist who has worked at multiple Olympic Games, dry needling and just recently a work shop on the shoulder – “not just the rotator cuff”. I love being a massage therapist, I never get sick of hearing people say how much I’ve helped their quality of life. I’m very focused in getting to the bottom of musculoskeletal problems, every patient I see brings a unique case for me to solve. I pride my self on my anatomical knowledge which aids me with systematically normalising muscle and fascia and restoring proper function.

I’ve been a personal trainer since 2011 and started working for Total Fitness & Massage in September 2012. I work in HR during the day to pay the bills, but fitness is my passion. I get such a thrill out of helping our clients improve themselves, from little things like running a bit further than last week, going up a ‘colour’ in resistance bands,

…or finally mastering those hooks in boxing, to the bigger things like seeing those ab muscles popping, or losing 10kgs in 10 weeks! It such a huge thing to see people achieve things that they didn’t think would be possible and I love being a part of that.

I really feel I can relate on so many levels with our participants, I wasn’t a fit girl at school, I was teased for being a slow runner, and not just by the students. I played Hockey all the way through school, but it wasn’t until my 20’s that I really got into fitness. I’ve not always had a healthy relationship with food either, I’ve been quite a big girl on more than one occasion in my life (size 22 clothes at one point), and this unhealthy relationship with food combined with some addictive tendencies has seen me suffer from both extremes of eating disorders. Long story short, I’m human, I get it, we aren’t all where we want to be, but achieving your goals is possible, starting is the hardest part.

More about me:

  • I am the youngest of 3
  • I’ve been married to my soulmate Ben for nearly 13 years
  • I don’t have any kids yet but maybe one day, for now I am happy being an aunty to 9 fantastic kids, and mother to my big fur baby Jerry, who I couldn’t love more if I’d actually given birth to him myself
  • I often get mistaken for being much younger than I am, which is probably down to my love of colourful hair, piercing and tattoos
  • I like being outside in the sun, singing, going for long walks, spending time with my boys, taking photos, and spending way too much money on pretty dresses and high-top sneakers.

I’ve seen some setbacks with my own fitness this year thanks to a foot injury (I got that playing basketball), but I absolutely love coming along to some of the sessions that I’m not taking, so you’d better believe I’ll be right there beside you all in 2018, let’s smash our fitness goals together!

Job: Remedial Massage Therapist, Yoga Teacher, perpetual student…

Previous job: Remedial Massage Therapist, Hospitality, perpetual student

Family: My Mum is Dominique and is a music teacher and is part of where I get my love of creative arts from. Dad is Andrew and has an Ag Science background and is currently a maths/science teacher at St. Mary’s in Hobart – I thank him for passing on the need to always question, think critically and keep learning! My Brother Callum and I have a great relationship also – we climb mountains together, get reckless and enjoy all things nature and philosophy in one another’s company!

Favourite Foods: Mangoes, Avocados, Macadamias, Coconut, Zucchini, Beetroot, Sweet Potato – All things plants and unpackaged, basically!

Favourite Music or Band: The Fleet Foxes, Mumford and Sons, Boy and Bear, Angus and Julia Stone, Bon Iver, The Idea of North, 2Cellos, Max Richter… I like all things folky, acoustic and have a love for deep philosophical lyric, mellow stringed instruments and the diversity of the naked human voice (a capella stuff).

Fitness Training inside or outside? Outside, every time.

Favourite type of exercise: Bushwalking and mountain climbing, closely followed by trail running, yoga, swimming in the ocean…. actually, anything done in the beauty of nature away from most other humans and sometimes with my favourite humans is right up my alley!

Things I do for fun: Bushwalk, go climbing/slacklining, swim in the ocean, make sand sculptures on the beach, draw, sing, cook vegan feasts, learn languages and read linguistic text and generally learn more about myself spiritually and physically with each and every day.

The best thing about working with the Total Fitness and Massage team is… Working with a team of professionals who are also passionate about changing the world for the better in various ways including massage therapy! I also get to teach and share yoga, which is very special to me!
